“Is making sure a child colors inside the lines really all that important? Can art really have such a profound impact on a child’s life and the adult they will later become? According to Sonja and Esin Tanrisever and their book Free Art Learning With Kids, art can have far more reaching effects than you may think.

Art is much more than fun and games time for children. As mother and daughter team Sonja and Esin Tanrisever point out in their book Free Art Learning With Kids; Introduction Book 1, art encompasses many facets of life. Art can help children grow into strong, independent and confident adults and aid them with higher learning such as in physics and mathematics.

“Children will gain knowledge and experiences upon concepts like volumes, proportions, and balances which, for instance, are directly related to mathematics, physics or geometry,” is noted in the book. The ability to express oneself freely and openly through art can also help children and adults who have suffered a traumatic experience. Expressing oneself – especially for a child who has been through a traumatic event – can be extremely difficult. But through art, the child can many times release feelings that have been bottled up inside or it can help them to express feelings they couldn’t find any other way to relate to the adults in their lives.

In Free Art Learning With Kids, emphasis is put on “teaching really starts with our concept of the child.” The teachings and experiments in this book are a result of a blending of Scandinavian and Anatolian culture by two Swedish-Turkish artists whose passion about the importance of allowing children the freedom of expression in art is evident. Children, they say, start out with what adults may consider a haphazard attempt, or a messy piece of paper with unorganized scribblings and doodles. But, as the book explains, “Messages in children’s drawings are reflections and interpretations of the outer world, in the way it gets imaged within the spectrum of children’s own psyches.”

Often times, children are not given enough credit for the free thinking, imaginative and unadulterated individuals they are, and unfortunately adults – without even realizing it – can hinder their intellectual and creative growth. Free Art Learning With Kids emphasizes free expression and allowing children the ability to create at

Free Art Learning With Kids emphasizes free expression and allowing children the ability to create at their own pace. It asks the reader “What can we learn from children?” And answers the question with, “When the gates towards the depths of children’s fantasy World are about to open, we will find ourselves in places of unequal degrees of fragility, deliciousness, and pure expression.”

The book talks about how children are taught to always stay within the lines when coloring a picture. This, the book says, is too structured and hinders a child’s natural imagination and creativity. By allowing children the freedom to color or paint unobstructed by instructions or what is considered ‘the norm,’ children are free to express themselves and display their “creative approach to life.”

Free Art Learning With Kids speaks to all adults, including teachers. It takes the reader through the different ages and levels children go through while developing mentally, emotionally and creatively. Children should be allowed to create in what the book refers to as “free zones” where they are not judged or commented on for what adults might consider as mistakes.

“Our aim is not to coax them to become practicing artists but to enrich their lives through art and help them gain the inner strength they’ll need to discover and explore the world.” (Free Art Learning With Kids)

Free Art Learning With Kids; Introduction Book 1 is the first in a series of books aimed at helping adults, parents and teachers nurture and grow a child’s creativity, independence and psyche. This first book explains the importance of expression in art to a child’s development as well as the different stages throughout childhood and how this changes in art. It is written in such a way that encourages adults to work right alongside the children, growing and learning … and having fun, while discovering about themselves as well. Techniques and tips for everything from workspace to materials are provided to give every adult the perfect place to begin on their artistic adventure.”

“When one teacher educates hundreds of creative and self-confident children, we can change the future of the world in the long run.” (Free Art Learning With Kids)

“Creativity is an essential element in the process of child development. Art, therefore, plays a crucial role in allowing children to express themselves according to their own unique abilities. Sonja and Esin Tanrisever have a wealth of experience in working with children, and of nurturing and encouraging their artistic abilities. In their easy to read, informative and well-written book, Free Art Learning With Kids they provide a fascinating insight into how art can enhance the child’s cultural development and how the parent can assist in encouraging their child by adopting a thoughtful and considerate approach. They concentrate on the principal of learning together with children as they gradually expand and mature in their drawings.

Accompanied by descriptive and helpful charts, Sonja and Esin elaborate on the stages of a child’s artistic development from two years of age, at which stage the pencil may be something of an experimental toy, through to later childhood where the desire for reality in their pictures has taken precedence. There are also contributions and quotations from leading experts in the field.

The emphasis of this book is on encouraging children’s individual enterprising spirits and promoting self-expression; to assist them to produce their own images from their active imaginations rather than relying on the continuous prompting of the teacher.

It is intended that the techniques expounded within the book can be extended to promote the art education of adults. This book, therefore, provides art enlightenment not only for children but adults also. It is intended that further publications will follow and that artwork produced by children will be showcased on the authors’ website.”

“Children who are trained in arts and culture develop better skills in understanding events taking place in their surroundings and for expressing themselves. Sonja and Esin Tanrisever’s book is an instructive guide for this process.”

“The educational approach and motto: “What can we learn from children?” Which often gets emphasized in this work, should, in my view, be representing a basic approach in educational scholarship.

In this book, where exciting experimentations of synthesis between Scandinavian and Anatolian rich cultures, have been passed on to children of the World by two Swedish Turkish artists, will be provided guidance for families and educators. Also with this book, instead of teaching the children, you will experience the happiness of learning together with children. My thanks to Swedish Turkish Artists Sonja Böhlander Tanrisever and Esin Tanrisever to whom we owe this art pedagogical product.”

The authors are clearly very knowledgeable about their subject, drawing on their own personal experiences of working with children, as well as pertinent and insightful research into the history of pedagogy. Written with a clear and concise language, this book emphasises the importance of letting children`s creativity run free in a safe and uncritical environment. I recommend it to parents and educators, of course, but also to anyone who is interested in learning about the fascinating process of the development of creativity which happens at the early stages of childhood and can manifest itself in many different ways.

Free Art Learning With Kids is a true help for parents (and relatives) who love spending time with their children creating art pieces suitable for different age groups. This book is also useful for school teachers in their art lessons. In my opinion it also gives music pedagogues great impulses for integrating arts in teaching music. Beside this, it gives comprehensive information about childhood, the development of the child, progressive education, holistic learning and creativity, as well as it shows possible techniques, materials, equipments, teaching methods and examples of preparing suitable conditions, which help to bring children into creative activity, in which they get the opprtunity to actualize their own ideas individually and independently without being judged. Another very interesting chapter deals with what parents can learn about and from their children by interpreting and talking about the pictures they have drawn. A lot of pictures help comprehending what the authors are talking about especially for people, as I am, who do not have too much experience in drawing or painting. I am looking forward to the announced following publications!
